The reason that Cole wanted to live in that moment is when the narrator says, "In death there was no control, no anger, no one to blame, no choices, no nothing" (Mikaelsen 83) Cole wants to live so he can still have control.

Cole is making his own decisions on how he wants to live and what he does. For example he decided to beat up Peter and to burn the only thing he had as shelter.

Cole is controlling his own story by making his own decisions either bad or good. He decides what he wants to do and no one can tell him what to do. In the text, the narrator says,"Rage controlled Cole's hand as he drew back, paused for a split second, and then flipped the lighted match inside the shelter"(Mikaelsen 25). This shows that he decided to burn the shelter and supplies even though he needed those things

Cole controls his life by making others afraid of him. He likes to make others scared of him. If he fails to make others afraid of him he gets angry. An example of this is when he attacks the spirit bear. The narrator said,"Cole found courage in the spirit bear's stillness. It must be scared. Why else would it just stand there instead of attacking? Cole found his smoldering anger ignite"(Mikaelsen 64)

Cole's actions control the story of his life. For example, instead of accepting the consequences of breaking into the store, he chose to attack Peter instead. Still, no one ratted on Cole Matthews without paying the price" (Mikaelsen 7). Cole's choices affect what is going to happen later in his life.
