He is not controlling his story very well. He is letting the anger take control of him. For once at the end of pat one he is finally able to control his story because he is controlling his anger.
Cole says,"'Whatever happens now, I'm done being mad'"(Mikaelsen 110). Here, Cole is controlling his story.
Cole now makes his own decisions instead of anger by saying,"Beginning today, he would tell the truth." Instead of being mad at everyone and blaming others he will be himself and control himself.
Cole Changes his life by deciding he wants to live. Cole states that, "All that mattered was living"(Mikaelsen 84). this is when Cole makes his decision.
Cole is controlling his life because of his actions. He starts out by hating every living human but changes as he gets mauled by a spirit bear. The narrator said," Cole realized how badly he wanted to live. The food he had thrown up was still food''(Mikaelsen 89). This quote shows how badly Cole wants to live and how much he has changed. At the beginning he didn't care about living but he realized how much value living has and now wants to live.
I believe Cole is starting to control his story or growth as a person, The reason I believe he is controlling his story is because of how he is using his dark past to grow from it and get better as a person. In the novel, When Cole is laying on the ground dying slowly on the ground. He then noticed dead sparrows on the ground. He finally began seeing himself caring about something for once asking if they were okay. "He called into the darkened branches, are you ok?"He put away his jelousy and didn't put himself first.
"He called into the darkened branches, are you ok?( Mikaelsen 79)
Cole is controlling his own actions in his life. He chose to beat up Peter in the previous chapters and now he is choosing to act peacefully. After Cole's peaceful encounter with the spirit bear, he realized that the world has more to offer. Cole thinks, "How much beauty had he missed in in his lifetime? How much beauty had he destroyed?" (Mikaelsen 97). This shows that Cole is having different views, and is going to change his attitude and actions toward the world.
In the end of chapter 13, Cole is leaving the hospital he was in and is being sent back home. The author tells us that Cole is done with lying. He says, "From now on he would speak the truth, even if it meant going to jail. He spoke softly. "I don't need to prove anything. I'm telling the truth." (Mikaelson 111). This means that he actually wants to change. He doesn't want to lie anymore. This proves he is controlling his life differently.
Cole is very much controlling his own story. He does not except help from others. On page 28-29, Garvey tries to help Cole out and show him something. He chose to do what he wanted here. He didn't really care about Garvey"s help, he was just thinking about himself. Later in the story when he arrives to the island, Cole makes another decision. On page 26 Cole decides to light his hut on fire. "Inch by inch the billowing flames devoured the supplies and shelter" (Mikaelsen 30). Cole continues making decisions that effect him later in his life.
Cole is controlling the story of his life with anger. He is always gets mad at everything, and he does not know how to control it. ''Cole jumped on peter again and started smashing his head against the sidewalk(Mikaelsen,7).
Cole is controlling his own story by making his own choices in varius and diffrent ways. He also is controlling his own story by showing that he does not care about certain things like hurting people and animals. In chapter 7 page 64 it says,"Even as he spoke, he started forwarding, gripping the knife and aiming the spear at the Spirit Bear's broad white chest." This affects Cole because if he continues on doing these choices, life will give him a hard time and he will get no where with harming people or animals. Everything will just fade away and it will all happen back to him.
Cole's controlling his story by determining if his story should end. Cole
decides to live his life and try to survive as long as he can on the island. As the narrator states, "What other choice did he have if he wanted to live?" (Mikaelsen 85).
Cole is controlling his story by having choices. Cole says,"To be alive was to have choice. The power to choose was real power, not the fake power of making others afraid"(Mikaelsen 83). This shows that he choose to be good and realizes the actions he made. He also realizes and takes the blame for his actions.
Cole is controlling his life by changing his perspective of the world. He now says he will only tell the truth from now on."From now on he would only speak the truth, even if it meant going to jail"(Mikaelsen,111).
